Joel Mercerproduct engineer

About Joel.

Product engineer, Manchester. Ten years of taking business problems from first sketch to production code.

I've been building for the web since 2014, and paid to do it well since 2016. The short version: I take a business problem and ship the software that answers it, doing the design, the build and the awkward conversations in between.

I started at Pilcrow, a small Manchester agency, where I learned that clients don't buy code, they buy their time back. Then five years at Halyard, a freight software company, going from the ninth employee to leading product engineering. Since 2022 I've worked independently, one project at a time, mostly for teams of two to twenty people.

The work I'm best at sits between a real-world process and a screen: bookings, payroll, quoting, ordering. The kind of software where the users have a day job and the software had better respect it.

Away from the desk I run slowly, bake averagely, and coach a kids' football team on Saturdays, which is better training for client work than any conference talk.

Where I've worked.

2022 to now

Independent product engineer

Design-and-build engagements for small product teams. Halyard, Sable & Rowe and Moorfield Timber are the write-ups on the work page.

2017 to 2022

Halyard, senior product engineer

Ninth employee. Built the customer portal, the driver app's backend, and eventually the team: I hired and ran a group of five engineers, and learned I prefer building products to running headcount.

2016 to 2017

Pilcrow, developer

A Manchester agency, sites and web apps for regional businesses. Two years of shipping under deadline for people who read invoices carefully.

before that

Computer science, University of Leeds

And a year of fixing WordPress sites for anyone who'd pay, which taught me more about production than the degree did.

What I work with.

most days

  • Ruby on Rails or Django
  • Postgres, always
  • Server-rendered pages with Hotwire or HTMX
  • Enough plain JavaScript to make a screen feel instant
  • Hosting somewhere unexciting, with good backups

when the job calls for it

  • React, for genuinely app-like interfaces
  • TypeScript on anything a team maintains after me
  • Whatever your existing system speaks
  • Rewrites as a last resort, never a default

No percentages, no star ratings. If you want the formal CV as a PDF, email me and I'll send it over.

currently booking : autumn 2026

Working on something like this?

If it sounds like the projects on the work page, I'd like to hear about it.
